While I was speaking at one of my Workshops last year, someone in the audience asked me a question which motivated me to research in depth today’s topic, “sadness”. One lady stood up from her seat, raised her hand hesitantly and patiently waited for me to turn and look at her. As soon as I saw her I asked her to go ahead and share her question. She said: “I feel down and sad often, and don’t know what to do, can you please recommend me something to overcome this feeling Rozhy?”
We all know that there are many theories that address depression and ways to control it: from prescribed drugs –with terrible side effects- to accessories to avoid radiation produced by electronics –which are temporary-. Technology plays a very important role in our society and we are constantly exposed to the static released by all kind of electronics and unfortunately most of the times we abuse the use of it. These are just a few to mention, but very few of them focus in finding the true causes of this serious state of mind as well as of informing and educating our society in ways to prevent it, fight and eradicate it. After my research, I firmly believe that one of the main causes of all our illnesses is having set us apart from nature. We must go back to it and re-discover our true essence. This may be one of the best ways to prevent sadness and depression which are conducive to other illnesses fatally irreversible.
Naturally we all have experimented at a point of our life a degree of temporary sadness. This is normal and part of our human nature; however sadness can turn into depression when it becomes “chronic” or “addictive”, because it manifests permanently versus temporarily. It should be taken seriously since its early stages of developing. When the condition is severe, it’s more difficult to eradicate but is never too late to fight for a joyful and more fulfilled life.
Firstly I would like to address the importance of healthy foods intake. Stay away from processed sugars. But why not sugars, you may think? The physiological effect produced by the consumption of processed sugars (refined sugar, fructose, corn syrup, etc.) causes for the brain to release dopamine and endorphins which in turn create euphoria or hyperactivity in children and adults. It is accompanied by a sudden short lasting increase of energy as soon as it enters de bloodstream. Short after there is a mental and physical exhaustion and depletion of energy that impedes focus and learning capability and performance. Needless to say the impactful effect it has in other vital organs of our body. I believe this is a powerful reason for us to watch the intake of processed sugars, do you agree?
Secondly, have you thought how do you feel after watching TV and/or being in front of the computer for 4 or more hours? I still remember when TV had just become popular, my father used to tell me and my siblings “don’t get close to the television; it is not good for you”. Today is a known fact we are exposed to these discharges of static electricity constantly and even though if we cannot perceive or feel it, it penetrates our brain and body and sadly we don’t know with certainty what damage it may cause. On the other hand what my research also shows that after watching sad, loud, depressing and/or violent films (music, disturbing language, etc.), it does affect our mood, agitates our mind and alters our blood pressure. Instead, it is advisable to watching happy uplifting films and comedy that make you laugh.
And lastly, I would like to emphasize of the importance of getting back to nature. This means, go outside more, eat more fruits and vegetables, get involved in outdoor activities, etc.. Do more of the things you like and enjoy, dance, sing, paint, play an instrument, write poetry, practice yoga, tell jokes, laugh and smile, let go of worries, be a child again. In this paragraph I also would like to remind you to surround yourself with positive people because our bodies move through energy as we have already discussed before, that means that the vibration or personality of others, has an effect on us too. All human beings possess an energy field that irradiates from inside to outside and in the same way it absorbs from our surroundings from outside to inside. And because we all are children of Nature, we are all connected and have an effect on others as much as others have an effect on us, we emanate and perceive both positive and negative energy waves. Always be aware of this principle.
To conclude I am leaving you with three steps of what you can do to help yourself or others to prevent and/or fight and/or eradicate sadness and low state of mind:
1. - Eat fruits, vegetables and nuts. Avoid processed sugars and/or genetically modified products
2. - Enjoy the outdoors. Take deep breaths and smile. Practice activities that elevate your spirit.
3. - Surround yourself with positive people who love and respect you.Until next time!
