Welcome to the Happiness Corner. Last chapter I shared with you the 4 basic points recommended by the Harvard Medical School to maintain a healthy brain and I am briefly mentioning them to you to get into the second part of this chapter:
1.-Learn something new (go back to school, attend workshops, venture into new careers or professions, etc.).
2.-strain your brain (force your mind to learn a new language, stay alert to new experiences, etc.).
3.-Get uncomfortable and be social (Aging originates in the moment you feel complacent. While young people are bold explorers, older people are timid homebodies who prefer to stay in a rut within their comfort zone, instead take new ventures like visiting cities and/or countries, get out of your comfort zone) and lastly.
4.-Be social (Isolating from society is the number one contributor to brain loss reserves which have built up over the years. Instead increase interaction with others; attend social networking events, etc.)
We have discussed how to “work out” your brain. Now it is understood our mind works both in conjunction with our brain and independently. What I mean by independently is that we don’t need to have a brain to have feelings, this means I can be in love with someone and my brain is not involved but we do involve it when I allow it to judge like: “I wished this man I love had more money”, then definitely our ego and brain get involved.
According to the Oxford Dictionary “mind is, the element of a person that enables them to be aware of the world and their experiences, to think, and to feel; the faculty of consciousness and thought”. This brings me to the conclusion that Mind is physical and beyond matter or nonphysical.
Some religious beliefs define the mind as the connection to the Superior Being, and on the other hand the ego is the connection to the rational entity. Because of the nature of our mind which is both physical and nonphysical, it’s important to understand the infinite potential it contains.
Our mind perceives the neutral signals of the brain, rationalizes, discriminates and turns those signals into thoughts and feelings. Our mind is connected to the conscious and subconscious and has the power to elect between being happy, angry, sad, etc. It shows preferred flavors, chocolate, vanilla or strawberry. If our mind is so powerful, what can we do to maintain a healthy mind? Taking in consideration the free will - or conscious mind – we were given, obviously we can make choices and a healthy mind is a mind based on positive thinking .
These are the exercises I recommend for maintaining a healthy mind:
1.- Wake up every day thanking and appreciating everything that has been given.
2.- Pay attention to the qualities of others instead of their defects, it’s a nicer feeling.
3.- Don’t judge others. No matter what others think or say, you always look at the bright and positive side of the situations. If someone is aggressive or insulting, let it go, it’s not about you.
4.- Instead of arguing your point, learn to listen more.
5.- Be happy with what you are, possess and represent, don’t worry about what others have.
6.- Give to others without thinking about it, the first intention is the one that counts.
7.- Be appreciative and thankful always.
Reflect on the above exercises for the mind and write on a piece of paper your accomplishments or thoughts, you will soon notice changes in others and what that means is that you are the one changing and as a result the energy transforms around you.
Until next time!
