FC Dallas scores two late goals to down Vancouver, 3-1

FRISCO, Texas -- FC Dallas (10-7-10, 40 points) vaulted back into the Western Conference playoff picture with a clutch 3-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC at FC Dallas Stadium last night.

FC Dallas came close to taking a one-goal lead in the first minute of the match when right back Kellyn Acosta played a ball forward to Jackson, who started the match at forward due to the absence of Panamanian international Blas Perez. Jackson went by his marker to the end line before knocking a pass backward to David Ferreira, but the Colombian’s first-time shot was well high of the crossbar behind Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted.

Just three minutes later, Whitecaps FC finished its first shot of the game when Camilo found Kenny Miller in space deep down Vancouver’s right flank. Miller took a touch before centering a pass for Daigo Kobayashi. The Japanese midfielder timed his run perfectly to meet the pass at the top of the six-yard box and redirect a shot to the back post, beyond the reach of FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz.

FC Dallas answered in the eighth minute when Fabian Castillo pushed a simple pass out wide to Je-Vaughn Watson. The Jamaican took a touch from two yards outside the area before launching a line-drive shot at the near post. The rising blast ducked just under the crossbar to level the score, 1-1.

The home side controlled possession throughout the evening, ending the match with a 62/38 edge, but it took until the 87th minute for FC Dallas to break through. The play began with substitute Eric Hassli recovering a loose ball in Vancouver territory and slipping a pass down the left flank for Castillo. The Colombian sped into the box before chipping a pass to the back post. Arriving at the perfect time, Diaz hammered a full volley over Ousted’s head to win the game.

Left back Jair Benitez scored a late insurance goal for FC Dallas in spectacular fashion. Dribbling up the left flank, just past the midway line, Benitez spotted Ousted off his line and drove a left-footed shot into the far side netting from 50 yards out to make the final tally, 3-1.

Scoring Summary:
VAN – Daigo Kobayashi (Camilo, Kenny Miller) 4
DAL – Je-Vaughn Watson (Fabian Castillo) 8
DAL – Mauro Diaz (Fabian Castillo, Eric Hassli) 87
DAL – Jair Benitez (Mauro Diaz) 90
